A note from Becky Brooks, R.N., Director of Clinical Services at Jefferson County Health Department:

The mission of the Jefferson County Health Department is to prevent illness, protect health, and promote wellness through the assessment of needs, development of policy, provision of education and assurances of services.

Everyone in the health department is dedicated to:
P - Preventing illness and disease,
E - Educating the community on health and environmental issues,
O - Offering resources and programs that promote healthy living,
P - Protecting health and our environment,
L - Linking up with others to strengthen community partnerships,
E - Excellence in providing quality services to our entire community in a caring manner.

Jefferson County Health Department has eight registered nurses, a social worker and a health educator that provide a wide range of preventative services, both at the health department and in the community.

Some of the many services provided by the nursing division of the Jefferson County Health Department include: Maternal Child Health Nursing (home visits, genetic screenings, childhood lead poisoning prevention, vision and hearing, childhood lead and Denver Developmental screening); Chronic Disease (cardiovascular and diabetes programs, osteoporosis education, and tobacco prevention education); Communicable Disease Control (immunizations, TB, sexually transmitted disease); Family Case Management (Adverse Pregnancy Outcome Reporting System, HealthWorks); Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program ; DNA Testing; and Travel Immunization Site.

Jefferson County Health Department has worked hard to develop a more effective means of providing access to quality, affordable care for the under-served population in our area. In January 2001 we opened our Jefferson County Health Department Wellness Clinic one-day a week to provide general health care for all ages, from infants to adults, school physicals, and provide sexually transmitted disease testing, treatment, counseling and referral. Starting in September, 2003, we plan on opening a Genetic Counseling Clinic one-day every other month. The Genetic Counseling Clinic will be staffed by an M.D. specializing in genetics and a genetic counselor through a contract with Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.

The health department has grown tremendously in the last few years, and the accompishments of this health department would not be possible without the efforts of our wonderful staff and the continued guidance of our Board of Health members.

Thank You!

Becky Brooks, R.N., Director of Clinical Services
